People profile: Simon Lynn

Our Project Manager, Simon Lynn, discusses his career story with Core29, sharing his areas of specialism, what he enjoys doing in his free time and the importance of being surrounded by a good team.

What does your role involve?

My role involves a little bit of everything in the business. While my main job is to ensure technology and systems projects are progressing in line with expectations, I also do application support and I am the subject matter expert for a number of systems. In a day, I can be looking at a new system improvement and defining what the business needs from it, providing a password reset or helping map out a process for a new system deployment. It’s never the “same old” here.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My job involves a lot of work with people. Pre-COVID, this was all face to face, so often I would be asked to look at something and I went to the site to meet new people and find out how they do things. It’s great to meet the people that do the important work in the business day to day and help them overcome the issues they have or identify problems we can solve with our systems or processes. I meet a lot of great, hardworking people and it’s a good feeling to be able to help them focus on their expertise and take away the mundane from their workload.

Do you have any particular areas of specialism?

I pick up systems and technology quickly. This is a bonus for when I really need to understand what’s causing an issue in an area of a business. I’m also a bit of a wiz at process mapping, which involves detailing out a process to a customer and then highlighting the main points and potential solutions that can help to move a business forward.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a similar role?

I’d say go for it. In some way shape or form, we are all project managers, from how you manage your daily tasks to the plan you put in place to decorate your home. We are all working with projects of some kind, and if you enjoy that then you will enjoy a project management role. Second to that, you need a good team around you. At Core29, I have been fortunate to work with some really amazing people both in the past and present, and it helps to give you a little extra boost each day.

What is something you are passionate about?

I’ve done a lot of video work since I joined Core29 for video training and tender support. I have always had a love for TV and film and often find myself looking at how something was shot, so I now film and edit various things when I can. I’m also a gamer, as are a lot of my colleagues at Core29. I can say, you find out a lot about your colleagues when you are playing a game of Among Us together.
